Summer is supposed to be a time of relaxed afternoons, lounging in the sun and travel…well for me relaxed, laid back time like that just does not happen without some serious planning…to include shopping, stocking up and pre-packing. If I get everything in order, ahead of time- I am more apt to take friends up on those last minute outings and opportunities to just coast and take it easy.

For example, I pick up a new beach tote every year. Last year’s bag is stained yellow, the copious amounts of sunscreen that have been accidentally applied to its inner and outer layers has in fact not protected the bag from the rays, although the label promised lush, wrinkle free fun in the fun.

When it comes to beach bags I like fun colors or prints and lots of room inside with a decent shoulder strap so I can carry all my stuff while still clutching an icy cold beverage glass in one hand while I gently stir the straw around the refreshing elixir with the other.

A summer day out of the house and having fun in the sun often means not being home for lunch. I love hanging out by the pool or on the deck with friends, but having to spend extra money for fast food or having to clean up to go into a sit-down style restaurant takes away from my pool time. I always pack a nice little lunch, simple, easy to keep cool and I know it will hit the spot.

I have tried lots of different types of lunch carriers. The Cooler: These keep things cold alright, but they are all so big and bulky….even the littlest ones I’ve seen are still too big and bulky for easy carry. The Brown Bags, (then subsequently and unpleasantly, my purse.) can’t keep up with the cool and condensation that comes with summer lunch. I treat myself to a new lunch tote every year as well. Lunch poolside or at a picnic or even at the office can be a nice break in the day and a stylish lunch toe can really be a nice pick me up.

No one wants to appear vain, but there are very few times -when after we spend all that time getting ready to go on a summer outing -that our carefully procured look is not under attack as soon as we step out of the house. The sun is working hard to melt the colors from our faces and wind teases at our carefully placed locks. The best defense against gasping at your reflection in a store window several hours later, is a personal compact cosmetic mirror. Keep it in your tote and it will always be packed, along with your sunscreen and a back up lip balm. She had to go through all the work of having to replace it and all she would have had to do was pick up a passport cover before she left. I recently found out that you don’t have to settle for the same ‘ole same ‘ole when it comes to passport covers either. Well, I would often leave it in the beach tote and then I would not have it when I needed to hang my ‘everyday’ purse in the bathroom at the gym. If you had to think about whether or not you have a favorite bug, which would you choose. For me, I would choose Lady Bugs. Lady Bugs have been my favorite for a long time and for many reasons. They are quiet, calm bugs that never scared me when I was a little girl.

I grew up in a part of the country with wise, hardworking women who knew a thing or two about telling a good proverb or finding the right metaphor for the situation. This is when I was first introduced to the story about the lady bugs. I don’t know how old I was when I first heard it, how many times I heard it for that matter for how many different situations it was applied too… but it stuck with me so I will share it.

When I was young I used to love hunting for lady bugs in the meadows near my home. I would run through the tall grass, searching the grass tops and down below near the earth. I would turn over rocks and lean in so close to the tree bark that the smell of the moss made a home in my nose. It would feel like hours of searching and searching. Then exhausted, I would fall into that same tall grass and drift off and take a nap in the sun. When I woke up, slowly sitting up and looking around to remind myself where I was, I would notice something on the hem of my dress, then also on the back of my hand. Quickly realizing the Lady bugs had found me. The tops of the grass all around, my shoestrings, and the palm of my hands.
The moral of this story is that sometimes when we put so much effort into the hunt, what we are hunting can be elusive. But if we just relax and enjoy ourselves, the thing we are hunting for, will come to us.

Sometimes what we are hunting is a boyfriend or a husband. Sometimes it is a promotion at work or a better job. Sometimes it is the goal to start a family or many other things to which we aspire to. I try to keep the symbol of the Lady Bug in my life to remind myself to slow down, to relax, to be patient and what I am hunting will come to me. In subtle ways, push pins, sticky notes and even my purse hook.

It was just last week when I was out with friends having a great time at a wine walk. We were sipping wines and enjoying a leisurely stroll from wine station to wine station through a wonderful shopping district. After sipping our last selection, we decided to pop into the new Tuscan Italian restaurant because they had a lovely patio and we had only heard raves about their menu. Our table was located in the perfect nook of the patio, we were very pleased.

As I took my seat, I remembered I had, at the last minute, changed my mind about my handbag. You know, the chance to coordinate the handbag and outfit…well, from my everyday bag I grabbed out my lip stick, wallet, sunglasses, pill box and a few other essentials; however, I neglected the purse hook I always keep in my handbag. Sitting down to dinner, when I need it most, was not the best time to think of it.

Our group was large and the table was full of wonderful Tuscan Italian dishes and no place for my handbag, so I reluctantly placed it at my feet on the patio. I felt it safely resting near my feet all evening. My friends and I swapped work, family and relationship war stories, laughing and commiserating as the sun slowly set.

Eventually we realized we needed to work out the bill and I reached for my handbag tucked comfortably at my feet. Resting it on my lap while I rummaged for my wallet, a bit distracted as I tried to remember what dish on the list was mine, I felt something strange on my neck. I reached up and brushed my neck with the back of my hand and then pulled my hair up and away from my back. It was at that time that my friend across the table from me let out a loud squeak, I looked up at her and saw all my friends were also giving me the most repulsed look. One of my friends regained her breath and announced, “That was a cockroach that just ran across your neck!” The rest of my friends started to make their own noises of repulsion and I shouted, “Did I knock it off? Please stop being disgusted and help me….is it still on me?” Finally my one brave friend next to me watched as the little sucker took flight when I had swatted it from my neck and she chased it down and gave it a good squash for me. The very idea of it still gives me the heebie geebies and makes me feel all itchy.

Once the adrenaline stirred up by the cockroach began to wane I realized the bug had gotten on or in my handbag while it sat on the ground at my feet. Well I learned my lesson, the very next day I ordered purse hooks for all of my handbags.
