The Experts Agree: Use a Purse Hook!

I received the following message in a forwarded email from a friend. This hits way too close to home for me not to share it with you. This is why we need pursehooks people!! Here you go…

‘Have you ever noticed girls who set their handbags on public toilet floors, then go directly to their dining tables and set it on the table? Happens a lot !
It’s not always the ‘restaurant food’ that causes stomach distress. Sometimes ‘what you don’t know will hurt you’!
Read on………….
“Mom got so upset when guests came in the door and plopped their handbags down on the counter where she was cooking or setting up food. She always said that handbags are really dirty, because of where they have been.”

It’s something just about every woman carries with them. While we may know what’s inside our handbags, do you have any idea what’s on the outside? Women carry handbags everywhere; from the office to public toilets to the floor of the car. Most women won’t be caught without their handbags, but did you ever stop to think about where your handbag goes during the day.

‘I drive a school bus, so my handbag has been on the floor of the bus a lot,’ says one woman. ‘On! The floor of my car, and in toilets.’

‘I put my handbag in grocery shopping carts and on the floor of the toilet,’ says another woman ‘and of course in my home which should be clean.’

We decided to find out if handbags harbour a lot of bacteria. We learned how to test them at Nelson Laboratories in Salt Lake , and then we set out to test the average woman’s handbag.

Most women told us they didn’t stop to think about what was on the bottom of their handbag. Most said at home they usually set their handbags on top of kitchen tables and counters where food is prepared. Most of the ladies we talked to told us they wouldn’t be surprised if their handbags were at least a little bit dirty.

It turns out handbags are so surprisingly dirty, even the microbiologist who tested them was shocked.

Microbiologist Amy Karen of Nelson Labs says nearly all of the handbags tested were not only high in bacteria, but high in harmful kinds of bacteria. Pseudomonas can cause eye infections
staphylococcus aurous can cause serious skin infections and salmonella and e-coli found on the handbags could make people very sick.

In one sampling, four of five handbags tested positive for salmonella, and that’s not the worst of it. ‘There is fecal contamination on the handbags’ says Amy.

Leather or vinyl handbags tended to be cleaner than cloth handbags, and lifestyle seemed to play a role. People with kids tended to have dirtier handbags than those without, with one exception.

The handbag of one single woman who frequented nightclubs had one of the worst contaminations of all. ‘Some type of feces, or possibly vomit’ says Amy.

So the moral of this story is that your handbag won’t kill you, but it does have the potential to make you very sick if you keep it on places where you eat. Use hooks to hang your handbag at home and in toilets, and don’t put it on your desk, a restaurant table, or on your kitchen countertop.

Experts say you should think of your handbag the same way you would a pair of shoes. ‘If you think about putting a pair of shoes on your countertops, that’s the same thing you’re doing when you put your handbag on the countertops.’ Your handbag has gone where individuals before you have walked, sat, sneezed, coughed, spat, urinated, emptied bowels, etc! Do you really want to bring that home with you?

The microbiologists at Nelson also said cleaning a handbag will help. Wash cloth handbags and use leather cleaner to clean the bottom of leather handbags.’

So there you have it! If you don’t listen to me, listen to the experts! Use a purse hook! Visit www.SilverHooks.com for a ton of cute options!

How Much Weight Can a Purse Hook Hold?

Some women love small handbags and others prefer them to be oversize. This article is for those women who need a large handbag and believe they are the exception and their purse is too heavy for a purse hook. Not true, I always say, and to prove it we put our hooks to the test. Each purse hook in our product lineup was individually tested to determine how much weight it can actually hold.

We begin with the Design Hooks
These hooks are the lowest priced purse hooks and we expected them to hold the least amount of weight. So we started with 10lbs. This was no problem and the hook stayed securely on the table. 5lbs was added to the hook for a total of 15lbs. Again, this was not a problem and the hook held the weight securely on the table. 5 more lbs was added to the hook and this is where we began to see some rocking of the hook as the weight was being distributed unevenly throughout the hook. The hook was still remaining on the table and the weight was being held but not as securely. For this reason, we have determined that the maximum weight the Design Hook can securely hold is 15lbs.

The next set of hooks that was tested was the crystal set.
We begin with the package of three containing a star, martini and heart shaped hook. We started with 10lbs. on this hook which could be held very easily. We added weight in increments of 5lbs until we reached 25lbs. and the hook began to wobble. Therefore, it was determined that these hooks can securely hold 20lbs on a table.

The single crystal hooks are the next style that were tested. These hooks are very sturdy and considered to be one of our strongest most durable hooks. We started with 10lbs and knew that we would have to go much higher. After gradually increasing the weight, we reached 50lbs and the hook was holding safely and securely. We were able to increase the weight up to 70lbs, however it began to wobble and shift on the table past 50lbs.

The hooks in our floating collection were next to be tested. We started with 10lbs and gradually increased the weight until we reached 45lbs. when the hook began to wobble and shift determining that this hook can securely and safely hold 40lbs.

We continued this process with the rest of our purse hook styles and following is a list of the maximum capacity each hook could hold safely and securely on the table:
Silver & Gold Wreath- 40lbs.

Folding Hooks- 20lbs.
Clock Classic Hook- 30lbs.
Black Frame Classic Hooks- 30lbs.

The list goes on, but I will spare you. You get the idea right? The least sturdy hook can hold 15lbs. securely. In my opinion, your purse should not weigh more than 15lbs. I realize that some may, which is why there are other options. If you do not see the weight capacity for a specific hook that you are interested in, let me know and I can get that information to you.

The bottom line and the purpose of this article is to demonstrate that these purse hooks will hold any woman’s purse safely and securely on the table.

Why do people really need a purse hook?

When I first discovered the purse hook about 3 years ago I thought, “this is silly, do I really need this?” I was so intrigued by this innovative invention that I bought one anyway. As I sat down at restaurant after restaurant, I realized how useful the purse hook really is. When there was not an available seat at the table for my purse- I used the hook. Then, I started using it even when there was a seat available. I had easy access to my purse if I needed something and I was able to keep an eye on it.

I have heard several women say, “my purse is nothing special, if I ever get an expensive purse then I will use a purse hook.” While I can understand this mentality, my response is always this, “Did you know that one of the most unsanitary places is the bottom of a woman’s purse? Next to airplane bathrooms of course.” I often see a light bulb go off and women realize where they put their purse; the bathroom floor, a sticky bar table, dirty restaurant floors. Would you put your shoe on your kitchen table? Probably not- but you’d put your purse on it. Purses are often touching the same surfaces as our shoes but yet we don’t realize how dirty they really are.

Picture this: You walk into a restaurant. You sit down and try to decide where to put your purse. The back of the chair is rounded and there are no available chairs, so you put your purse on the floor in between your legs. When the waiter delivers your diet coke, she spills it. She apologizes and asks if any got on you. You don’t seem to have any on your clothing and tell her not to worry. You need to use the restroom and you grab your purse from the floor. You notice a few stains from the spilled diet coke but decide to try and clean it later. You walk into a bathroom stall and check for a hook on the back of the door. No hook, and no ledge to rest your purse. Should you hold it while you do your business? No, you put in on the floor. Then you need to wash your hands, you place your purse on the sink counter and realize it was wet. After you wash your hands you grab some paper towels to dry your purse off. You return to your table, sit down, and put your purse back on the floor in between your legs.

Your purse was splashed with diet coke, covered with filth from the bathroom floor, absorbed dirty water from the sink counter and returned to sit on a sticky floor.

Now lets try this one: You walk into a restaurant. You sit down and pull out your purse hook. You hang your purse on the table next to you. When the waiter delivers your diet coke she spills it. She apologizes and asks if any got on you. You check yourself and see nothing, check your purse and see nothing. Hooray! You need to use the restroom and grab your hook and your purse. You walk into the bathroom stall and check for a hook on the back of the door. No hook, and no ledge to rest your purse. You pull out your purse hook and hang it from the top of the door. Voila! Instant purse hook. You finish your business and wash your hands. You hang your purse on the sink counter while you wash and dry. You grab your purse and hook and return to your table. You sit down, hang your purse on the hook, slide the hook on the table and join in on the conversation!

Your purse was saved from diet coke, bathroom floor filth, dirty sink water and a sticky floor.
That, my friends, is why people really need a purse hook.
